Jon decides his future lies south of the wall. He rides out to join Robb in his fight. He’s prevented from his oath-breaking by his friends, who ride after him and drag him back. Jeor Mormont announces that the Night’s Watch will march north of the Wall to figure out what’s going on, and Jon better jolly-well come along. The boys prepare for winter.
Chapter Review:
Jon Snow saddles up and, ignoring Sam’s pleas, heads south to join his brother Robb Stark. He does have a few doubts about the reception his brother will give him. As Lord of Winterfell, Robb might feel the need to behead Jon for oath-breaking. Grenn, Pyp, Toad, Halder, and Matthar catch up with him and, by being unarmed and unarmored, they shame Jon into returning with them.
As he serves Mormont breakfast, he’s plotting his next escape. But Mormont reveals that he knows his men, and had set a watch on Jon. He’s going nowhere.
Mormont uses the dastardly trick of logical argument to convince Jon to stay. Is Jon such a great warrior that he would tip the war in Robb’s favor? Has Jon paid any attention to the portents at the Wall, you know, like the dead rising? The realm’s real fight is right here, and right here Jon might actually make a difference. The Night’s Watch will sortie north of the wall to find Benjen Stark, to gain intel on Mance Rayder (the King Beyond the Wall), and to learn the truth about the Others.

Eddard "Ned" Stark - Former Lord of Winterfell. Executed by King Joffrey Baratheon for treason.
Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night’s Watch.
Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night’s Watch. Heavy-set and cowardly. Attendant to Maester Aemon. Friend to Jon Snow.
Jeor Mormont - Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch.
Maester Aemon - 100-year-old maester of the Night’s Watch. Now revealed to be Aemon Targaryen.
Benjen Stark - First Ranger of the Night’s Watch. Missing north of the wall. Younger brother of Eddard Stark.
Ser Jaremy Rykker - Acting First Ranger, in Benjen Stark’s absence.
Mance Rayder - leader of the Wildlings, self-styled King-Beyond-The-Wall.
Ghost - Jon Snow’s direwolf.
Castle Black - Headquarters of the Night’s Watch at the Wall.
