Joan Smit is a well known personality in the world of African netball. In the early 90’s she was the first woman of colour to play for the Namibian national team and went on to captain the squad at the 1991 World Cup. She also spent time as the coach of the Under-21 side. Now Joan is working for the International Netball Federation as the Regional Development Manager for Africa, helping to provide opportunities for children and young people to participate in the game. In this interview we talk about cultural diversity across a vast continent, dealing with funding issues, media representation and female empowerment.
