Burning peat. Smoke rising from a burning peat bog during a drought. In extreme drought peat bogs can catch fire and burn with a smouldering action producing smoke and noxious fumes. Once started the will often burn for months or even years. This photograph shows part of a fire that started in Russia in 2010, burnt for several months and destroyed 10,000 homes.
