So, what IS the Doctrine of Signatures?

From a scientific perspective the doctrine of signatures, which has been dated back to the first century CE although the title was first coined during the Renaissance, tells us that herbs resembling various parts of the body can be used by to treat ailments of those body parts. Ancient physicians used the Doctrine of Signatures to treat their patients. For instance, the flowers of eyebright were said to resemble eyes, and therefore to be useful for ailments of the eyes. The leaves of lungwort, which bears the modern botanical name Pulmonaria (referencing the pulmonary system) resemble lungs and were believed to treat diseases of the lungs. In magic, the use of herbs, roots and other naturally occuring materia have been widely attributed to their usefulness due to the shape, texture, and aromas they produce.

Join us as JayDee of hoodoohousedetroit.com discusses with us the development and application of the Doctrine of Signatures!
