Using myths and legends as metaphors for personal development.

The minotaur philosophy explained in episode 23 of the Minotaur's Maze podcast.

One of the best ways to use myths and legends is as metaphors to level up your own life.

Theseus & The Minotaur is one of the greatest myths for this purpose, because there are so many analogies that can be drawn upon.

It's the reason why I chose the Minotaur philosophy as my brand.

What is the Minotaur Philosophy?

Well, it’s based on the Greek Myth Theseus and the Minotaur.

The Minotaur was a half-man half-bull beast located in the middle of a complex labyrinth.

7 boys & 7 girls were given up as sacrifice to the Minotaur every so often.

One day Theseus, the son of a King, decided enough was enough and that he would kill the Minotaur.

Before entering the labyrinth he was given a sword & piece of string to find his way out by Princess Ariadne.

Theseus went inside the maze, confronted and fought with the Minotaur until he killed it.

He followed the string out and set off home victorious.

Before he left however, his father the King told him to change the colour of the sail - if it was black it meant Theseus was dead, if it was white it meant Theseus was alive.

In his triumph, Theseus forgot to change the sail.

His father thought he was dead, so he killed himself too.

So how can you use that story to improve your life?

Well, because each element is an allegory:

  • Minotaur – Your anxieties, fears, obstacles and challenges

  • Theseus – You / The potential hero within you

  • Maze/Labyrinth – The complexity of your mind and your life

  • Ariadne – The people who will help you

  • Sacrificial Boys & Girls – The cause/mission you want to tackle (or what you become if you continue to run and hide from your fears)

  • Sword & String – The skills & strategy you will use to better yourself

  • Theseus’ Father – Your responsibilities before, during & after victory – and the people telling you to hold back

The story is pretty much a metaphor for your life, mindset and the path you take (or don't take).

The podcast takes a look at each of the elements in more detail.
