If China wants to turn itself into a microchip powerhouse it’s going to need to find a lot more people who can design and make semiconductors.

US moves to restrict Chinese tech companies’ access to key components has made Beijing more determined to be able to go it alone and make sure flagship firms can produce their products without relying on imports which can be cut off by a foreign government.

But those lofty aims are facing one major bottleneck. There aren’t enough people in China working in the micro-electronics industry to get the job done, and Chinese universities still aren’t turning out enough graduates who want to go into the sector.

In this episode, reporter Zhang Shixuan talks to host Timothy Pope about how that problem can be solved, and how long it’s going to take.
