Difficult Patients: Are They Difficult Or Do They Have A Myofunctional Disorder? - a podcast by kimi nishimoto

Why are some dental patients SO difficult? They gag, they choke on water, they can't open wide or stay open, everything is sensitive to cold water, you have to tip toe around sensitive roots, you can't clean their teeth like you normally would, taking x-rays makes them gag, hypersensitive palate, the facial muscles fight you, and all around everyone feels worn out afterwords. In frustration we think, why are they SO difficult?! Are they difficult, or do they have a myofunctional disorder?

What IS a myofunctional disorder? It could be a domino effect that is caused by mouth breathing, breathing dysfunction, tongue tie, abnormal swallow, low tongue posture, etc. If someone is not used to breathing through their nose, during dental procedures when we take away their ability to mouth breathe it will feel like they are choking. Anything that will make them feel like their airway is being threatened will cause them to gag, choke on water, or want to spit constantly.
