James Nestor is a journalist who is known for his groundbreaking book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art and DEEP: Freediving, Renegade Science, and What The Ocean Tells Us about Ourselves. He has become a huge advocate for nasal breathing and sleep science and health and is educating and bringing this subject to light.


We breathe about 25,000 times a day. Very often we hear that there is not a difference between nasal breathing or mouth breathing as long as you are breathing. In the book he volunteers to be a guinea pig to prove the changes in the body by switching to mouth breathing at Stanford. 10 days nose plugged with silicone and 10 days nasal breathing and the physical and physiological changes that happened. Nestor shared that nasal obstruction triggered instant apnea and snoring and he went from having no snoring issues to snoring through much of night as well as feeling foggy and blood pressure increase.


We will also get into some of the science of nasal breathing and what we call “Over breathing” or breathing too much and too rapidly. Think of when you are stressed or scared, you breathe quickly and shallowly with your chest. This makes your nervous system think you are in a perilous situation and triggers the “Flight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn” aka Sympathetic nervous system.  When we breathe slow and with the diaphragm, we active “Rest and Digest” or Parasympathetic nervous system. We will also talk about types of Breathwork and meditation.
