Here we are, finally at the conclusion of the long and winding Europa League campaign.  from the depths of Belarus, to the harshness of southern Russia, across to Georgia and winding through those German villages… The Europa League campaign is a marathon not a sprint and the traveling aspect plays a huge significance in the final outcome of the competition.

It's the tournament that no-one wants to be in but everyone wants to actually win when they get to about the quarter-final stage. The 2021 final will see Villarreal play Manchester United in Gdansk, Poland.

These two sides have seen four recent matches end with a 0-0 scoreline. Of course, they also played against each other in the 2008 and 2005 Champions League. How times have changed! Villarreal have probably performed better than their final opponents in Europe this season, but in a one-off game anything can happened and Man Utd are still certainly the favourites pre-event.

The Yellow Submarine finished 7th in Spain and will be entering the Europa Conference League next season. One thing they really do have on their side is their manager - a man who is synonymous with this competition. Unai Emery has won the Europa League on three separate occasions, all whilst coaching a Spanish side (Sevilla). Their record in this competition in 2020/21 has been phenomenal, with 12 wins and 2 draws, beating Salzburg, Dynamo Kyiv, Dinamo Zagreb and Arsenal in the process to the final.

Now let's take a look at their opponents Manchester United…  manager OIe Gunnar Solskjaer will hope their firepower can land him his first big title since becoming Red Devils boss.  I finished second in the Premier League behind rivals Manchester City.

On the final day of the season they even managed to rest many of their first team players, fielding predominantly a youth team - and still got the win over Wolves. Hopefully (for them) the players will enter this European final feeling refreshed.

They will be able to rely upon star midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who has scored 19 goals in this competition in recent years. They also have history on their side, they're looking to lift the Europa League trophy for a second time, following their triumph in 2017.

As always, Eduardo Siles is joined by Alvaro Romeo and Daniele Fisichella (our experts in football and betting).
