This week Selene shares a bit of an interview with 84-year-old cycling Tom Philips. Philips is an avid rider, and has been since he was 38. And while he may have slowed down a bit due to age, he hasn't lost his taste for adventure. Only two years ago he entered (and finished) his first gravel grinder. Says he fell a lot. Ever noticed those funny little knobs at the back of the rear derailleur or where the cable enters the brake caliper, or coming out of a mountain bike shifter? Those are barrel adjusters and they can allow a rider or mechanic to make significant adjustments with nothing more than their hand. No tools required. Patrick explains how they work and some of the signs that a bike may need only an adjustment of a barrel adjuster, as opposed to a full-blown tuneup.
