Ivan Misner- How BNI Global Founder Generates $13.1 Billion Per Year Through Referral Marketing - a podcast by Ben Gothard | Project EGG

Ivan Misner, Ph.D. was born in a working class home to two loving parents. His mother, a natural networker, taught him people skills and his father taught him the value of hard work.

Though neither of his parents were entrepreneurs, Ivan showed a strong propensity for business at an early age. He remembers starting a few different businesses and learning how to sell as a youngster.

That being said, Ivan spent 10 years in the formal education system after high school, getting a masters and eventually a doctorate in management and business. From there, he started working for a few companies as a high level manager.

That is, until he got sick and tired of a “bad boss.” Once Ivan had enough, he went out on his own, starting a management consulting business and taking life into his own hands for the first time.

As an entrepreneur, he noticed that his best clients came from referrals. So, he started a local referral group in his city that consisted of himself and a few friends. However, he only let in one owner of every business type (for example, two branding experts in one referral group was overkill), so there were people who wanted in but weren’t able to join the first group.

Those first few people asked Ivan if he could help them establish their own groups. The idea caught on like wildfire, and he quickly realized that he had stumbled upon an opportunity to build a massive business filling this massive gap in the market.

Last year, Ivan’s business, BNI, generated over 9.1 million referrals and $13+ billion in revenue for his members around the globe. This is his story.
