Nianest Alers, MPH is an epidemiologist/vector-borne disease surveillance and response coordinator with the Hawaii Department of Health and also host the Latinx health education podcast – Mejor con Guanabanas. She has a very untraditional journey into public health. Nianest got her Bachelor of Biology from Universidad de Puerto Rico and then went on to start a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology before quitting and shifting to get her Master of Public Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health. She has worked as a bilingual nutrition educator as well as securing a CDC/CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship for the Hawaii State Department of Health where she currently works for in a full time position.
