SHOW NOTES

00.0 – The power of Twitter as a news source is once again on show. Twitter breaking news that there’s been a shooting at a Trump press conference at the White House.

3.00 – Discussion of the optics of Peter Smith (a council CEO) leaving his local council area to move interstate during the pandemic. Is it appropriate for a position like this?

5.45 – Ellen DeGeneres – her woes continue.

8.00 – Sky News botched a story about Brett Sutton standing down. Once Sky had reported it, other media outlets jumped onto the story without verifying, with little or no consequences for reporting unfactual details.

15.00 – The challenge with news these days is that people don’t try to break stories. It’s easier to fall off the cliff if you’re walking close to the edge. Hutchy believes only 5% of journalists are trying to break stories.

17.00 – Discussion of Callan Ward receiving death threats on Instagram over his performance as it relates to failed bets. How should players and clubs be navigating their social media presence and deal with abusive ‘fans’?

21.00 – Social Media can be used for positive change as was displayed by the coverage of the Richmond player misconduct story. Did we agree with how Hugh Riminton broke the story on socials?

25.30 – Holy Moley – Brian’s been cut from his new blockbuster mini golf show.

28.45 – What are the takeaways from the condensed form of AFL footy we’ve seen in the past couple of weeks? The month could be packaged up for broadcasters. Hutchy has a plan for the middle of the year when fatigue kicks in!

37.20 – Question of the Week for Social Status was from Brendan Davey via Email. Brendan asks:

“Is writing a whole article based on a person’s tweet considered journalism? I find it a waste and very lazy. IN FACT, I could give you the proforma:
-insert that said person has made a tweet
-then put in the key point of that text
-follow this not a backstory of previous tweet and problem
-finally add in the rest of the tweet for good measure.
No attempts are made for direct comment. It’s an article about a tweet.
Hope you can discuss”.

That’s our Question of the Week for Social Status. Social Media marketing is more important than ever and if your business needs social media marketing, Social Status are offering fifty 50% off to any Sounding Board listener. Visit their website HERE.
