I have noticed - maybe realized is a better term - that my default mindset when I look at photos is that of a critic. I’m immediately dissecting the photo. Is the composition strong? How is color used? Is the subject in focus? How would I do things differently? Can the photo be better?

There is nothing wrong with critique. Critique is good. It’s a great way to learn and grow as a photographer. Self-critique is extremely important, too. Every artist wants to grow. Identifying areas for improvement can help push us forward.

However, admiring photos is also important. For me, that seems to have been pushed into the background somewhere along the way. Today’s podcast is a reminder to me to take a moment and simply admire good photos. Admiration is also a useful creative tool, one that can inspire us to move our own art forward.
