Whenever I hear cars parking outside my apartment, I imagine you’ve come back to me. I imagine your keys switching off the transmission. You check yourself in the rearview as you rehearse these lines in your head.



I’m sorry. That was a mistake. I hope it’s not too late.



And so as soon as I hear tires on the gravel, I rush to see if it’s you. When I see it isn’t, I continue practicing what I’d say i̶f̶when you come back.



It’s not too late. There’s nothing to forgive. I love you.



Hope can be such a cruel thing.
