How has policing and prosecution changed over the last three decades in England and Wales? What drives changes in legislation and attitudes towards crime and punishment? What has happened to the right to silence and has it increased the risk of miscarriages of justice?

These are all questions raised in Dr Hannah Quirk's book 'The Rise and Fall of the Right of Silence', which looks at how this right has served as a practical expression of the principles that an individual is to be considered innocent until proven guilty.

In this interview with Dr Anna Loutfi, Dr Quirk discusses her work and the problems now facing criminal prosecution and access to justice.

Dr Hannah Quirk joined The Dickson Poon School of Law in 2018. 'The Rise and Fall of the Right of Silence' is published by Routledge. https://bit.ly/2PYWfh0
