Extremely transmissible, the appearance of FMD in livestock populations tends to lead to mass culling of herds to ensure safety of the remaining livestock. Using “The Merck Veterinary Manual” as a guide, we discuss the etiology, transmissibility, pathogenesis, and epidemiology of FMD.
