Rachelle Schrute, hunter, conservationist and public lands advocate, joins Sam on The Wild Initiative to discuss her passion for hunting and conservation. Sam and Rachelle discuss how there’s nothing as exciting as having a bull screaming back at your calls and how she got within “licking distance” of elk on a hunt. Rachelle then discusses how the controversy over corner crossing in Montana cost her a hunt but kicked off her passion for conservation and public land access. They go on to discuss access issues and how important is for hunters to be writing letters and sitting in on commission meetings even though it’s not the “fun” part of conservation. Yet even in the face of her passion for conservation, Rachelle tells us about the death threats she’s received from within the hunting industry during her ascension to become “the poster child for everything that’s wrong with conservation.” Her response? “If you’re going to say that I’m doing it wrong, then maybe you should step up and do it the way you think is right.”... “if it all goes to hell, tough s#%t.” Sam and Rachelle also discuss the issues within the hunting industry and the ever-changing “purity index” of what’s allowed on hunting social media. Rachelle reminds us, “If ethical hunters stop sharing what we do, then all you’re left with is the douchebags sharing it and that becomes what people see as hunting.”... “If there are no visuals of what ethical, responsible hunting is, they will represent us all by default.”
