One thing the COVID-19 pandemic hasn't changed is the retail consumption of wine. In fact, even with restaurants closed down, drinking just moved from locations to homes instead.
On this episode, Gauri is joined by a pioneer in the Indian wine space - Rajeev Samant, Founder & CEO of Sula Vineyards. Rajeev has had innumerable firsts in India - from planting the first Sauvignon blanc, to revolutionising wine tourism with India's first winery tasting room in 2005, to opening the first winery resort 'Beyond By Sula' in 2007, and the country's first vineyard music festival 'Sula Fest', all of this leading to a thriving local wine industry in India, and bringing global recognition and a fan following for Indian wine and the Sula brand.
On this episode, Gauri talks to Rajeev about how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted wine producers and vineyards in India, how they recovered from a country-wide lockdown where all sale of alcohol was prohibited, Sula's decision to diversify into international wines a few years back, how these times have affected international sales as well, how the wine industry is able to generate rural and village level employment, why so few entrepreneurs enter the space of wine production, the growth of wine tourism, and lots more.
