THE LITTLE RED HOUSE by Nancy Armstrong

This is a story about a little boy who learns that everything that is fun cannot always be found in a toy box, or even in a book. A story about a little red house with no windows, no doors, and a star inside.

Jimmy starts out on an adventure that takes him many places, meets many people, and learns to trust in others as well as himself. This is a wonderful story about the love and trust a mother has for her son. Also, a story about always believing in yourself and anything is possible.

Nancy Armstrong has been an educator for over twenty years. Raised on a farm in Kansas, she enjoyed and experienced many beautiful days roaming the countryside exploring and learning about nature. The first time she heard this story, it captured her heart as she envisioned herself on such a quest. Growing up in the country, you experience many things that children raised in the city or towns do not. Every year, my family planted a huge garden. We had vineyards and several different fruit trees too. We would gather berries, collect walnuts, and pick wild strawberries from the meadows. I was in the second grade when I was first told this story with felt board characters. I have always remembered this story because I saw myself as that curious, adventurous character, not stopping until he found what he was looking for. As a teacher, I tell this story every year in September when it is apple festival time. The biggest thing I want my students to know is how simple learning is, and asking questions along the way is a great way to gather the information that will help them become successful in life. And I feel it is a wonderful story that needs to be shared with other teachers to use in their classrooms.
