Catholics read the Scriptures: Commentary on Benedict XVI's Verbum Domini by Bevil Bramwell OMIBenedict XVI's exhortation Verbum Domini is a concise summary of the theology of Scripture in the Catholic Church. This book is a graduate level analysis of the Catholic use of Scripture in prayer, liturgy and theology, as it is found in Benedict's exhortation. He also shows the possible uses of the modern tools of exegesis and their limitations when dealing with the Word given by God to his Church.The problem with this kind of tinkering was that one has to be expert in theological anthropology, in Christology and at least some philosophical hermeneutics. The highly developed skills that were demanded led to less able scholars treating the scriptures as a palimpsest on which they could write their own gospel so to speak. The issue of the unique nature of the sacred scriptures such that their only possibility of being understood lies in the tradition that gave them birth and that remains in union with them.Benedict XVI spotted this historical development and included a substantial theology of scripture and tradition in his presentation of the results of the Synod in 2008. As a result, in passing, he outlined a substantial educational project commensurate with the substantial reality that we call the scriptures. If it were ever to be implemented it would transform departments of scripture and the entire conception of how seminary education is carried out.Fr.
