MEMORIES OF MONTSERRAT by Dr. Irene S. Prospere

Dr. Irene S. Prospere has written a beautiful anthology of endemic colloquialisms from the perspective of one versed in the wit and nuances of the island people of Montserrat. Every syllable is heavily laced with the lilt and sharpness of a happy and carefree people, rich with the mixture of Irish brogue and colonial English.

She conjures the sweet memories of her home and of days past, growing up with her siblings, cousins, and friends in her beloved village of Collins Ghaut in St. Johns, Montserrat. Walking barefoot to and from school and getting up before the sun to do all her chores are fond memories of a time long gone. The characters in her stories are family, her mother and father, her brothers Wellington, Daniel, Stanley, Clyde, and Everton and her sisters Mildred, Inez and Elizabeth (affectionately called Babylyn).

Her main purpose in putting pen to paper is to capture all the memories, telling stories she heard of people she used to know and her many treasured friends, so that someday future generations can read Memories of Montserrat and never forget that the most important things in life are not riches or fame but family.

Dr. Irene S. Prospere, née Allen was born on September 13, 1944, at St Johns in the Parish of St. Peter, in the Island of Montserrat, West Indies. Irene Allen attended St John’s Elementary School, which was at the time held in St. John’s Anglican Church where her family worshipped. The school was eventually relocated on government property at Gerald’s, and she attended school there up to the seventh standard. After leaving school, she took extramural courses which included accounting under the tutelage of Mr. Vernon Lewis. Irene then joined the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade in 1964, and from 1966 to 1980, she was the chief lecturer in First Aid. She then served in the Royal Montserrat Police Service from 1970 to 1980 and was promoted to the rank of Corporal in 1978. She emigrated to the United States of America, entered Roxbury Community College, and obtained her GED in 1981. Irene obtained employment at the State of Massachusetts Department of Highway and Motor Vehicles where she was responsible for keeping and updating records of suspended driver’s licenses.

In 1982, Irene entered the Deaconess Hospital where she worked during training, eventually obtaining her Nursing Assistant Certificate. From 1984 to 1987, Irene attended the University of Massachusetts/Boston College of Community and Public Service where she received her Bachelor in Humanities degree. She received her certificate as a paralegal and was awarded for being the most outstanding student. In 1986, Irene obtained employment with Greater Boston Legal Services.

In 1989, Irene moves with her family to Florida, where she took up employment with the Department of Children and Families as a prevention and child protective investigator. Between 1997 and 2000, Irene studied at Troy State University where she received a master’s degree in counseling and psychology. During this period, Irene worked for Deveraux as a mental health counselor, and from 2000 to 2005 for Intervention Services as a mental health therapist.

In 2000, Irene enrolled in United Bible College and Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida, where she obtained a Doctorate in Christian Counselling in 2004. In 2002, Dr. Prospere started her own business under the name Irene’s Christian Academy, Inc. where she provides daycare services for infants and children through kindergarten and regular school education for children from kindergarten through twelfth grade.

She has published three books: Jesus, the Ultimate Counselor, Memories of Montserrat, and Playing In The Rain.
