The Strength of Courage by Alfred J. Dansbury Sr.

This is a story of an African-American soldier who serves in World War II and the Korean War. The book follows Master Sgt. David Henry through the horrors of war and through racism in the service and at home. He survives two wars and returns home, gets married and he and his wife raise four adopted mixed race children from Europe. The effects of the war leave him with mental and physical scars, and it takes years for him to begin to recount his war experiences to anyone.

While fishing one day he meets a fellow fisherman named Jim, and the two become friends. Over years of many fishing trips with Jim, Sgt. Henry begins to describe the hell of war to Jim, and the life and death struggle he endured to stay alive. Jim also recounts to Sgt. Henry moments in his life that were psychologically painful. Both men work to share and understand each other’s emotional struggles, in spite of some differences at times.

The book also covers two of Sgt. Henry’s adopted twin children. The twins were adopted while the Sgt. and his wife were stationed in Germany. Their mother was Austrian and their father was an African-American service man. He was shipped back to the U.S. shortly after the twins were born. German society considered mixed race children as “out casts”. With pressure from her family and German society, the twin’s mother gave them up for adoption, but she continued to write letters to Sgt. Henry and his wife for the next 40 years.
