The Adventure of Pinkus MaGee by Denise Steele

Pinkus MaGee starts her day thinking about the fun she will have with her aunt that day, when a butterfly flutters by her. She is mesmerized by the gracefulness of the butterfly as she watches its every move. Before she knows it, she starts shrinking to the size where she can get on the butterfly's back and they fly away together. Thus begins her adventure. Along the way, she encounters many animals. Since she loves so many animals, she is excited every time her path crosses theirs. After a few days, she finds herself getting homesick and must find her way back. Again, she depends on various animals to get home and can't wait to tell her family all about her adventure.

Denise was born and raised in California. For the first 10 years of her life, she lived in the country. Because her dad started horseshoeing for a living, he needed to work in a cooler climate than where they were living in the San Juaquin Valley, so her family (which included her 2 brothers and her mother and father) moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. At first the change of lifestyle by moving from country life to that of living in the suburbs of San Francisco, was difficult, but she eventually considered the move a blessing. Her and her family loved exploring their new surroundings, especially the city of San Francisco.

In 5th grade she was given the assignment of writing and illustrating a story to be read to the kindergarten class. Many years later this is what led to her interest in writing children’s books. However, prior to writing her first self-published book, she worked as an assistant to multiple loan officers.

For enjoyment she likes to decorate, read and travel.

Things started to take a turn when, in 2005, she started experiencing symptoms that led to her not being able to work as of 2008. During the interim she was going from doctor to doctor to doctor, trying to find out what was going on with her health. It wasn’t until 2017 that she finally received the diagnosis of having MS. As the saying goes ‘when one door closes, another door opens.’ Suddenly not being able to work was a door closing, but discovering her interest in writing children’s books was the door that opened.

What 1 started off as an enjoyable pastime, she hopes to turn into a means of making money since she is currently on disability.

In 2012 she wrote her first self-published book, which was illustrated by a neighbor who convinced her to have the book published. She enjoyed so much the experience of seeing her story come to life with illustrations that she wrote her second book in 2013. The title of her second book is “I Will Take Care of You”. And now her third book, “The Adventure of Pinkus MaGee” is out and was published the end of 2022.
