My True Love For Farming by Chris Brettell
Despite a poor education and not being able to spell, I have always had an interest in writing. I kept a daily diary supplied by the National Union of Railwaymen during my employment at British Rail. When I started a landscaping business in 1980, keeping a diary became even more important. In 1985 I answered an advert offering further education. My teacher like me had lived in Wraysbury and Ibsley. She encouraged me to write about my early years, family and farming. Despite my challenges, I am proud to say I wrote my story. I hope you enjoy it
Born in Hounslow, Middlesex in 1944, Christopher moved to Ibsley Drove when he was seven with ‘Mother’ and his siblings. He always found leaving hard but grew to love his new home and in particular all the animals helped to rear at their small bungalow. Over the years Christopher worked as a Farm Labourer, Builder, Milkman, as a Porter and Shunter for British Rail, risking his life on and under the tracks on several occasions, and as a Landscape Gardener. It was always his dream to have a real farm of his own but life had other ideas…
