The Road to Georgia Marble: How the Federal Road Led to Discovering Georgia’s Marble Industry by Bill Cagle

The Road to Georgia Marble tells an informative and concise history of Georgia’s marble industry that includes the quarries and the company that holds a complete monopoly on them.

The book shares the history of how the marble industry was conceived in the heart of Georgia. From the construction of a road through Cherokee land that led to the removal of Native American tribes, a discovery was cemented in the pages of history that weaved through different events from the establishment of a state, three wars, and the Great Depression until the present day.

Bill Cagle has a deep connection to the town and company that made a foundation in the marble industry. He also has a background working with historical societies as he had years of studying this history. Along with this, his first-hand stories about the Georgia marble give him a connection to the state’s history. With a great grasp of knowledge about the history of Georgia and how marble made a difference, Cagle is the expert when it comes to anything about Georgia marble.

The Road to Georgia Marble contains documents and photographs that back claims about the history of the Georgia marble industry and how a rock in the soil led to the booming of a business that is coveted by so many.

Bill Cagle is a sixth-generation resident of Pickens/Cherokee County, Georgia. A history enthusiast, Bill serves as president of the Pickens Historical Society. He regularly gives lectures on the history of Georgia’s marble industry. He draws inspiration and wisdom from his childhood experiences touring the quarries with his grandparents and hearing stories told by family members who worked in and around the Georgia marble industry. Bill and his wife, Bay, have been greatly involved in his community since moving back to Pickens County in 1997, where they have raised their two children. Bill has a 33-year career in the construction industry, where he currently serves as regional manager.
