About Izabel

Dr. Souza is an industry expert, academic author, instructor, and researcher on translation and interpreting. She served as Secretary General for the International Federation of Translators (FIT), as President, and later as Executive Director, of the International Medical Interpreters Association.

She taught interpreting for Bridging the Gap, i2B, Boston University, Cambridge University, and Osaka University.

Currently, her positions include: editorial board of BABEL; advisory board of Miami Dade College T&I Program; healthcare chair of the National Language Access Coalition; and project leader of the ISO 21998 Standard on Healthcare Interpreting.

Her first book Intercultural Mediation in Healthcare, describing the cultural work of medical interpreters, was published in 2016. She is writing her second book entitled Intercultural Communication for Healthcare Providers.

She is an active member of numerous T&I associations and is passionate about promoting language access as a human right.
