What do a sweltering hot day in New York City, the river flowing from the throne of God, and a river baptism service have in common?  Answer:  Robert Lowry's hymn, Shall We Gather at the River?  Of Lowry's many hymns, this is his best known.  It came about as his imagination took flight from the oppressive heat and dwelled on the "pure water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb."  Over time, it has also been used, and is a symbol of, baptism services conducted at the riversides.  Let us refresh ourselves as we contemplate that river of life.
