From the beginning God created His people to be in relationship with Him. Through humankind’s rebellion in the Garden of Eden, in the days of Noah, and at the tower of Babel, God has dealt decisively with sin while maintaining a way for His people to know Him. God called Abraham to be the father of a nation to be God’s own people. Through many years God nurtured Abraham’s family providing guidance through the law and the prophets. They became a nation but they did not maintain their faithfulness. God’s relationship with His people became distorted. Second Chronicles 36:15-sums it up:“The Lord, the God of their fathers, sent word to them again and again by His messengers, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place; but they continually mocked the messengers of God, despised His words and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against His people, until there was no remedy.”Hosea lived and prophesied years before the exile. God used Hosea’s personal life to illustrate the consequences of unfaithfulness and show His heart for His covenant people.
