In the Sermon on the Mount series, Mike Erre addresses the heavy topic of forgiveness. Citing parables and biblical examples, he identifies the scriptural approach to forgiveness. We learn forgiveness is not necessarily a one-time act. It is often a process. Reconciliation is the ideal, but not necessarily the outcome. Condoning poor behavior is not required, and boundaries must be set. Forgiveness doesn’t mean you will forget the offense. It is different than getting justice and consequences. It should be unconditional, even if the offender doesn’t get caught or found out; even if no one knows what they did; even if they prosper and are blessed; and even if they are not sorry.

Mike also provides indicators which verify the strength of our forgiveness: we keep no record or score of the wrongs; we pray for the best to happen to the person; we refuse to gossip about what they did; we are able to celebrate when they celebrate, and mourn when they mourn; and, of prime importance, we entrust God to handle the justice and vengeance.

Storytelling by Johanna Salt

Joanna shares her story of dealing with grief and anger after the loss of her husband, which was shortly followed by the unexpected death of her father. She was left as a single mother with adopted children. She angrily questioned why God would allow this to happen, especially since her husband had previously turned to the Lord and gained control of his alcoholism for a period of 8 years before his death. This was all compounded by the mental illness of one of her children, resulting in placement at a residential facility. Panic attacks became common for Joanna. Over time, after wrestling with grief and anger, she witnessed answers to prayers and re-discovered God’s amazing love and grace. She eventually married a wonderful man who adopted her son. They have been blessed together for 18 years now, reconciled to serving the Lord in the VOX Community.
