Tim Muehlhoff explores the question of what the purpose of the church is. The answer could be found in 2 Corinthians 5:20: “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” In this world, tainted by human sin, our job is to engage in the ministry of reconciliation so that God’s rule may be restored. This is an important responsibility that is given to every single Christian, not just the ones in significant positions.

The Christian job description can be summarized as follows:
1) Get the message right (2 Cor. 5:19) – We should articulate the Gospel in the language that people can understand and display love toward the whole person.

2) Get the tone right (2 Cor. 5:21) – We should convey the radical nature of God’s love in which all of our sin was put on Jesus so we may become righteous.

3) Do not discredit the message (2 Cor. 6:3) – We should address our fears and be persuasive, even though the conversations we engage in could be controversial and challenging.

Kendra had a fulfilling childhood growing up as missionaries’ child in South Africa, enjoying the nature and the simplicities of life. When she was in high school, her father was diagnosed with a degenerative disease. The period of pain that followed sparked something she calls the “if-only syndrome.” If only God would heal him… If only God would take care of this… Then in her twenties, her father passed away and the if-only syndrome came back. In the midst of her struggles, God spoke to her to care for those around her who are hurting. To this day, “if onlys” still remain in Kendra’s life, but she tries to find satisfaction in what God has given her and to find beauty in her suffering.
