This week, Tim Muehlhoff shared his views of the importance of self-talk. Self-talk is a key factor in our mental health, and by connection, our relationship with God. From a purely worldly perspective, three factors help shape our self talk/esteem: (1) our appearance, (2) our success, and (3) our perceived importance. The Bible recognizes that all humans have a delicate self-perception; Psalm 73 is a raw expression of the writer Asaph's self-esteem. In that Psalm, Asaph expresses his disappointment with God's failure to meet his expectations.. Tim reminded us that this disappointment is natural - we all may be disappointed with God at certain times. The way to prevent negative self-talk is to think about the impact that our speech may have on others, to go into God's sanctuary and experience His holiness, and to remember the benefits of following Jesus. That said, we need to recognize that our expectations may not necessarily be in line with what God wants for us - the "American dream" may have given us unreasonable expectations. With all of that in mind, we need to process our disappointment or frustration with the ultimate goal of becoming closer to Jesus in mind.
