In the Beatitudes (Matthew, Chapter 5) Jesus had a discussion with the Pharisees, who had accused Him of being a heretic by trying to abolish (nullify) the law. But in the conversation he confirmed that He was actually committed to all laws, whether they be “light” or “heavy” (minor or serious). In fact, His purpose for coming was to fulfill Torah (show it in fullness). He said that not even the lightest law will disappear; anyone who tries to do away with the least of laws will be the least in heaven. He gave illustrations to demonstrate that light commands were as important as heavy ones. He compared murder to hate and anger in the context of how we treat our brothers and sisters. He tried to communicate that breaking light laws leads to breaking heavy ones.

The Pharisees were self-righteous; they tried modifying their behavior in order to keep the law. However, behavioral modification should not be our goal. The true goal is to allow God to transform our heart. If we do this, we won’t have to worry about changing our behavior through self-righteousness.

Storytelling by Wesley Tao

Wesley Tao had a long battle with feeling like an outsider, leading to suicidal depression. He lived in Taiwan, separated from his brother and parents. TV programs he watched filled him with guilt because he couldn’t identify with those close-knit families. He shut down relationships despite coming to Christ after high school. Subsequently he served as a missionary in Taiwan, but felt isolated because he was “stuck” between cultures. Afterwards, he attended seminary. While in solitude, he confronted the pain from his past. He still struggles with American church culture, but is happy to have found the Vox Community.
