The Eucharist and Open Table - June 4 2017 - a podcast by VOX Community Podcast

Mike addresses a passage that is often misunderstood: 1 Corinthians 11:27-30. Churches today use it to tell us to get “cleaned up” before participating in Communion. However, this interpretation leaves out the cultural context. In the early church, people gathered in houses to share a supper, and Communion was part of it. In the Greek culture of that time, people ate according to their social status, creating a division between the rich and the poor. This division is what Paul calls “unworthy.” In the verses that follow, Paul urges Corinthians to examine themselves and discern “the body of Christ.” This is a call to consider how their actions affect other members of their community, the body of Christ. The body here is often interpreted to be referring to the Communion elements. If we look at 1 Corinthians 12:21-26, it becomes clear that Paul is talking about the body of the church. Each part of the body is equally important, so there should be no division! The passage is not about who takes Communion, but how we should take it, and the reason why we practice open table at Vox Community.

Storytellling by Theresa and Sherman Pollard

Sherman and Theresa, two podcasters from LA, share their journey of the past years and an exciting adventure they are about to embark on. Disillusioned and frustrated by the church, they began listening to the Vox Podcast and started hosting a gathering of local listeners. While this brought healing and growth, they were also struggling with some health issues, as well as exhaustion with daily life. After much prayer, they have decided to give up their cherished life and live on the road for a year, fully depending on God.
