This week, Mike laid the foundation for his next few teachings by outlining what it means to be a peacemaker. To begin, God created this world to be in a state of perfect peace, or Shalom. Cornelius Plantinga defines Shalom as the "webbing together of God, humans, and all creation in justice, fulfillment, and delight." God also created humans as His image bearers, which means that we are called to reflect His love and purpose. During this time, there was perfect order and all things existed together in perfect harmony. As we all know, however, that Shalom was fractured early on, and chaos was introduced into the world. The Old Testament refers to this brokenness many times; Isaiah in particular yearned for a time when peace would return to creation. Fortunately, Jesus represented the beginning of Earth’s return to Shalom, and called us to follow his example by being peacemakers. In short, peacemaking is taking something broken and restoring it to wholeness—specifically, to take the broken world and restore order and harmony. Jesus has called us to be agents and ministers of this restoration process and the return to Shalom.
