Baccano! (Episode 31) - a podcast by Sid and Bru

Baccano is a Japanese light novel series written by Ryohgo Narita and illustrated by Katsumi Enami and it is also our topic for today! Let's get ready to Bacca-Bacca-De-Baccano!

Baccano is a weird one to talk about. The anime is a mixture of three stories, mainly. One is the events that happen upon the famous train "Flying PussyFoot". The next is the story about mafia families and the secrets of what can be called their "immortality". The third story is the search for Dallas, a hooligan son of a rich family, who is used to wasting money and is looked down on by everyone else. These stories don't happen linearly. There are constant swaps from one story to another as they all happen in different years, and with the same characters. So, you'll be switching from 1930 to 1931 to 1932 and back and forth and back again, all in the span of 13 episodes. It can get confusing really fast. Did we mention that there are like, a bajillion characters to keep track of?

It might seem like we don't like it. We really do! There's a reason we are a little disappointed though. You see, watching the anime and enjoying it was great. We loved it! Then we learnt that the light novels they are based on are very different in many ways. For one, there is no confusing switching around of timelines. There are more characters and more details. There are also TWENTY TWO DIFFERENT NOVELS and the anime only adapts FIVE OF THEM. That's why we're sad! We want more! and we want it now! Although, it seems like we'll never get it. It's unfortunate, but that's how it is. We would love to dive deeper into this world and learn more and we will when we can get our hands on the light novels, but till then, we'll enjoy the anime, and we hope you'll enjoy it with us! The music, by the way, is phenomenal! Absolutely amazing. We definitely recommend you check it out!
