Last week saw a world first, in Nyon, in the Canton of Vaud. Unlike any other new rose competition, the Nyon new rose competition, is entirely zero treatment, and the results of this competition were on view last week as the roses were judged both by the permanent jury who have followed the progress of these roses since their planting in early 2019, and by the international jury who judged the roses on the day. There were dozens of medals awarded, as well as a perfume prize and the coveted Rose d'Or, awarded to the rose that received the most points. I spoke to Matthias Meilland of Meilland International about the competition, and the Meilland zero treatment heritage.
The miniature Meilland rose that won a Gold Medal is Zepeti, with deep red flowers, glossy green foliage, disease resistant and months of flowering. It is already available on line and in some stores, so you can enjoy a Swiss medal winner this summer! Photo by Michel Perret
The rose competition will be open to the public on the 31 July 16:00-19:00, 1 August 10:00-13:00, 28 August 16:00-19:00 and 29 August 10:00-13:00 You will be able to admire the roses and chat to experts about the competition and the roses.
