Today's Topic – Why planning a story is important before NaNoWriMo

So the plan matched the show flow, it was simple. I would go over abstractly what I look for in an outline to use for writing.  It would achieve my goal about talking about outlining.  It would help Michael prepare an outline for NaNoWriMo 2016.

However, as you listen to the show you will learn that is not what we achieved in the episode. Michael and I had very different ideas of what outlining means.  And Also, He had really spent most of his initial planning focused on world building, not thinking about a story.

The trap that does not kill us, makes us stronger.

I think it ended up being a great example of a risk world builders fall into.  It is easy to confuse good world building with story planning.  You are thinking out scenarios that could happen in your world.  If you are like me, you are visualizing scenes of it playing out. Little stories that you might confuse with the story you are planning to tell in your new world.  The scenes are great.  However, we are still not planning the story. Now, if we are lucky we might be able to use some of those scenes in our head. But, they could be completely useless for the story we want to tell.

We did not accomplish what we thought we were going to do.  However, it maybe became a better episode.  It shows that as writers, we can get ahead of ourselves. We should not be afraid to take a step back to ensure we are properly prepared.  And imagine if he started NaNoWriMo thinking the story was in his head.  Might he have sabotaged himself before he started?
