From Addict to Addictions Counselor (#97) - a podcast by Dan Koch

Jed Payne, host of the Church & Other Drugs Podcast, shares his story of serious lifelong drug addiction, how he ended up an addictions counselor, as well as some of the psychological tactics those counselors use to help addicts toward recovery. Specifically, “motivational interviewing” is a common approach Jed uses in his work, and Dan has recently been learning and practicing MI as part of his own psych education. This fairly practical conversation takes place in front of a theological backdrop which considers the utilization of social science and social services to be spiritually significant, taking advantages of the gifts and resources of people, institutions, and governments to make our world look more like the Kingdom of God on earth.
