One of my most popular guests, Mark Karris (episode 45: "Toxic Christianity" & Its Damaging Claims), returns to talk about his book Religious Refugees. Specifically, we talk through the five symptoms of what he calls Religious Disorientation Growth Syndrome, as well as 5 possible ways forward toward re-orientation.

5 Symptoms of Religious Disorientation Growth Syndrome:
1. Doubting or denying one’s religious beliefs that were once held as true.
2. Subtle or intense anxiety about a person’s relationship with God. 
3. Increase of painful emotions, such as anger, loneliness, shame, guilt, sadness, and despair. 
4. Isolation (community is massive for healing, meaning-making, and growth after trauma) and criticism (feared or realized) from members within their own family and/or religious community.
5. Existential angst concerning a person’s identity and future self

The 5 Stations of Healing we spoke about:
1. Becoming aware of and using one’s emotions
2. An “unholy huddle” — the importance of a community
3. Listen and be mindful of our emotions and therefore our selves
4. Values
5. Open and Relational theology
