Do. The. Work.

Last weekend, I was at a conference in Portland, OR and at one of the dinner events, someone asked me about how I got the book published. It’s a great story, if you’re ever interested in hearing it. I talked about how I met the publisher at another conference, and within 11 months the book was published and on the bookshelves of major bookstores around the world. Within 18 months, it had been translated in to both Chinese and Russian.

Do, do I feel lucky? Yes…And no. I went and found this quote by a childhood hero of mine, Lucille Ball. She once said...

“Luck? I don't know anything about luck. I've never banked on it and I'm afraid of people who do. Luck to me is something else: Hard work - and realizing what is opportunity and what isn’t."

I’ve got three ways you can experience more “luck” in your work and in your life. Now, I put luck in quotes, because I trust that the more I do the work, the more good things will come my way.

But first, I want to share something special. Please write this address down where you can see it later:

www.WomackCompany.com/nmp You can register for an online class to learn how to get more done, easier, and faster. Let me share some of what I’ve learned about doing the work:

1. Get really clear

Sometime today, write down the following dates: 2 days from now, 2 months from now, and 2 years from now. Then, next to each of those times, write the words: Clear. Visible. Blurry.

Now, what is clear to you about your future? What can you see with absolute certainty? What are you working on, have been working on, that you are certain will come to pass. Then, what can you see…Kinda? And, what is blurry? In order to achieve what you’re hoping to complete, you’re going to have to get much more clear about what you want.

2. Ask for help early on in the process

The 5 people you spend the most time thinking about and talking to will either help you, or get in your way. One of the benefits Get Momentum members tell us all the time is that there is a global network of professionals who is right there to help them along the way. Recently, three Get Momentum members have gone through a 4-week accountability goal-achievement program together. All three said that they made more progress on a single goal that month than they had in the previous year!

3. Be much more grateful every day

In the next 24 hours you’ll experience a lot. At work, in life, at play, you’ll have benefited from someone else’s time or energy or attention. Let them know you appreciate it, and watch what happens to your relationship...

The next Get Momentum Ojai Leadership Retreat is starting soon. As a member of Get Momentum, the next conference will cost you just $100. Imagine, 3 and a half days to focus on planning the following 12 months in a retreat-setting surrounded by 19 other people who have an absolutely clear focus on exceeding their goals in life and at work.
