Die Ausstellung »Markus Lüpertz. Kunst, die im Wege steht« (Sa, 29.04.2017 – So, 20.08.2017) würdigt das Werk von Markus Lüpertz. Während seiner Zeit an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe (1974–1986) positionierte Lüpertz mit Malerkollegen wie beispielsweise Georg Baselitz oder Per Kirkeby Karlsruhe als ein herausragendes Zentrum der deutschen Malerei.

Die im ZKM präsentierte Ausstellung schlägt einen Bogen zu den Anfängen von Lüpertz’ künstlerischer Laufbahn: »Kunst, die im Wege steht« hieß 1966 eine seiner ersten Präsentationen, die in Berlin stattfand. Das ZKM zeigt einen Blick auf sein Lebenswerk aus fünf Jahrzehnten, mit einem Fokus auf Malerei, aber auch auf Skulpturen, Reliefs und Druckstöcken. Lüpertz hat zahlreiche Serien geschaffen, darunter der 33-teilige Dädalus-Zyklus.

Following his retrospective at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris 2015, and prior to his exhibition at the Hirshhorn Museum and the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., the ZKM | Karlsruhe honors the work of the Karlsruhe based painter Markus Lüpertz with the exhibition »Markus Lüpertz. Kunst, die im Wege steht« [Markus Lüpertz. Art which Stands in the Way]. During his time at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe (1974–1986) Lüpertz, together with fellow painters such as Georg Baselitz and Per Kirkeby, positioned Karlsruhe as an outstanding center of German painting.

The show draws an arc to the beginnings of Lüpertz’ artistic career: »Art that stands in the way« was one of his first presentations that took place in Berlin in 1966. The ZKM shows the lifework from five decades of one of the most significant German artists of the post-war generation.
