With »Forest of Sensors« Yang Jian tries to create a landscape that reminds us of the circumstances, limits and familiar experiences in our daily lives. With objects of everyday life, such as furniture, potted plants and household appliances, the artist transforms the exhibition space into an obstacle course. Sensors are attached to the objects that register movements or touch and trigger an alarm. Visitors are invited to play a sort of game in which they move through the "forest" of obstacles without being recognized by the sensors. At the same time, the paths and movements of the visitors are controlled and manipulated: Only with a lot of caution and great effort - ducking, stretching, crawling or balancing - the work can be crossed successfully and without triggering an alarm. »Forest of Sensors« sheds light on how strongly technological media, which surround us in everyday life, determine and restrict our perceptions and actions. In this way, the work critically examines technological innovations, control and surveillance in both physical and digital space.

Mit »Forest of Sensors« versucht Yang Jian eine Landschaft zu schaffen, die uns an die Bedingungen, Grenzen und gewohnte Erfahrungen in unserem täglichen Leben erinnert. Mit Objekten des alltäglichen Lebens, wie zum Beispiel Möbeln, Topfpflanzen und Haushaltsgeräten verwandelt der Künstler den Ausstellungsraum in einen Hindernisparcours. An den Gegenständen sind Sensoren angebracht, die Bewegungen und Berührungen registrieren und einen Alarm auslösen. Die BesucherInnen sind eingeladen, eine Art Spiel zu spielen, bei dem sie sich durch den „Wald“ aus Hindernissen bewegen, ohne dabei von den Sensoren erkannt zu werden. Dadurch werden jedoch zugleich die Wege und Bewegungen der BesucherInnen kontrolliert, gesteuert und manipuliert: Nur mit sehr viel Vorsicht und großer Anstrengung – geduckt, gestreckt, kriechend oder balancierend – kann die Arbeit erfolgreich und ohne Alarm auszulösen durchquert werden. »Forest of Sensors« beleuchtet, wie stark technologische Medien, von denen wir im Alltag umgeben sind, unsere Wahrnehmungen und unser Handeln bestimmen und einschränken. Die Arbeit setzt sich auf diese Weise kritisch mit technologischen Neuerungen, mit Kontrolle und Überwachung im physischen wie im digitalen Raum auseinander.
