We're back with Part 3 of my interview with Chris Green from Merch Dojo and today we're talking traffic and how to drive it to your merch on Amazon.

Drive Traffic to my Merch

You can find any number of ways to drive traffic to your Amazon listings, but they all come back to finding an audience. Whether it ’s your audience or someone else's, it's about getting eyes on your products. Facebook and Instagram are both excellent platforms for finding an audience.

Make a Facebook Page

If you're going to try to run ads on Facebook, it's pretty simple, just make sure you create a page first. You can't run ads on Facebook without one. Make your page appealing. Don’t just make it about conversions. Make sure you provide value to your audience.

Best Strategy for Instagram

On Instagram, just go for it. If a guy has 500,000 followers ask him how much a paid ad costs. If the dude says it costs $50 to get him to wear your shirt, take it... take it and run with it. Where else are you going to find a place where you can get that much exposure for $50?

Facebook Groups

Facebook takes a little more nuance. Groups are a great way to get influencers to help you drive traffic to your listings but don't just join a bunch of groups and spam them. Give the group admin your best pitch, and offer him something special. You can even make private listings with discounts for specific groups or split profits with group owners.

Again, make sure you’re providing value. Offer to pay the group owner to post your listings every so often. Tell them you’ll give them $100 to make your product part of their header image. Do a giveaway where you let the group owner give away 5 of your shirts. Offer to cross-promote to help grow their group. Make them feel like it’s worth it to work with you.

What if the Guy on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter Says No?

If someone says no, it’s no big deal. Sometimes you can even send them a shirt or give them some advice for free. Having influencers on these platforms on your side is never a bad thing, even if your arrangement isn’t what you expected going in. If you provide legitimate value for these influencers they’re going to remember you. The risk of helping someone in this model is so low, why not give it a try?

Let’s Talk Numbers

Some people have seen huge sales on Merch by Amazon. 5k-10k units a day isn’t out of the question, but it’s all about how you define success. For some people, an extra $100 a month is a success. That said, Chris has grandparents that are making $4000 a month. He knows the person who made the “Basket of Deplorables” T-Shirt that sold at a clip of 10,000 shirts a day for multiple days just because it was trending on social media. This is a huge opportunity.
