One of my favorite things about running ultra marathons is the community and culture that surrounds these epic events, particularly the one hundred mile distance. There is something about the prolonged suffering and overcoming adversity that a runner faces in the course of the many hours it takes to complete an ultra that has a magical power to bring people together. Mentorship is one of the cornerstones of ultra. The passing down of tried and true techniques about how to train for specific terrain, preventing blisters, and buying your crew a beer and some pizza and just a few parts of that mentorship.
In this episode I discuss with Sherpa John Lacroix a few guidelines for the runner to follow during the course of participating in an ultra marathon. These “rules’ are meant to be an extension of that mentorship. Something to help the newcomers and maybe a little bit to remind the old timers that what makes this sport amazing is the community around it. Some say that ultra running has changed and everyone should get hip to the changing times and the term “old school” gets thrown around. If acting right, taking care of each other, and not being an asshat is considered old school than I’m guilty as charged.
