Healthy eating doesn’t have to stop when you hit the trails. Nutrition for marathon and ultra marathon training can be done with natural whole foods. Gu, gels, blocks, and gummy bears are indeed great sources of quick, cheap energy. Many runners and cyclists eat super healthy diets all day long but when it comes to training for endurance events all regard for wellness gets thrown out the window. Otherwise super health conscious ultra runners are gulping down hundreds of processed, engineered, and sugary calories when nutrition is vital to performance. This is crazy. In episode 20 of the Sugarstride Podcast we discuss whole food alternatives to the typical gel. Nature provides perfectly transportable and unrefined carbohydrates in the form of plants that go above and beyond the call of typical endurance nutrition products, offering loads of vitamins and minerals.
