Everyone has read about the adventures and exploits of climbing the highest peak in the world above sea level, Mount Everest. Did you know that it takes approximately 40 days to summit Everest and that doesn’t count the time it takes to get to base camp? What most people don’t know is how the Sherpas, who do the most dangerous and heavy work are grossly underpaid and underappreciated. Ruhani gives the background of climbing Everest and then interviews Elisa Zoltick who in 2019 founded, All Sugared Up, a nonprofit dedicated to raising money for the Apa Sherpa Foundation. The Apa Sherpa foundation was founded by Apa Sherpa, the world record holder for the most Everest summits. Apa Sherpa recognizes the lack of educational opportunities for the youth in Nepal, and therefore dedicates his organization to raising money to support education for the Sherpa kids in Nepal. All Sugared Up has currently raised over 3000 dollars and has baked over 6000 cookies to support the Apa Sherpa Foundation. Elisa is extremely knowledgeable about the plight of the Sherpas and offers insight into the dangers they face and the inadequate compensation for the work they perform. Ruhani finishes the hour by reading her original poetry honoring Mother Earth.
