The liver is an important organ in our body, performing over 500 functions to keep us healthy. In fact, you can describe your liver has the seat of various biochemical reactions.

From metabolizing fat to protein synthesis and detoxification, the liver works to help you get the best from what you consume. It also helps to store blood, minerals, vitamins, sugars, and other essential body nutrients.

However, the ugly part is that our liver can get affected by many activities we indulge in, and this interferes with the normal functioning of this vital organ.

Things that damage our liver:

Alcohol consumption

You need to know that everybody has different reactions and thresholds to alcohol. So, what may be overuse for one person may show no reaction in the other. It largely depends on how overworked your liver is and who much inflammation is already present.

Hence, you don’t necessarily have to drink too much alcohol to notice the negative effects on your body.

Too much of inflammation can cause cirrhosis and liver damage.

That’s why it is always advisable to keep it moderate- that’s two per day for men and one for women. However, reduce the frequency of your intake.

Drinking less water

You tend to become dehydrated when you drink less water, and this is bad for your health and overall wellbeing.

The liver needs a good amount of fluid to stay efficient, and drinking less water puts you at risk of liver problems.

Cigarette smoking

Smoking has been linked to many cases of lung and liver cancer. The smoke produced as you burn tobacco causes oxidative stress and it puts pressure on the liver to detoxify the blood.

This causes the release of harmful chemicals in the body, ultimately leading to liver cancer.

A high-sugar diet

Too much sugar in your diet can cause fat buildup on your liver. Most junks, processed foods, and colas contain fructose and only liver cells can handle this sugar, unlike glucose that can be used by all the cells in the body.

This means that frequent consumption of sugar or fructose can lead to irreversible liver damage.

The best thing is to avoid processed foods and turn to natural sources of sugar whenever you have sweet tooth cravings.

Medications

The liver is responsible for the breakdown of every drug you take, be it over-the-counter medicines or the prescribed ones.

However, taking high doses of drugs mixed can cause great harm to your liver.

Trans Fats

Most processed and packaged foods contain Trans fats. These man-made fats are also found in microwave popcorn, baked goods, pre-packaged and fried foods.

The bad thing is that Trans fats raise the level of bad cholesterol levels in your body, invariably reducing the level of good cholesterol. More so, diets high in trans fats increase your chance of gaining weight, and that’s harmful to your liver.

Other factors that can damage our liver include:

  • Eating heavy dinners
  • A stressful lifestyle
  • A sedentary lifestyle
