8 Foods, herbs, and supplements that strengthen the liver – Dr. Jason Jones Elizabeth City NC, Chiropractor

The liver is a powerhouse organ, responsible for over 500 functions in the body, ranging from the production of bile, cholesterol, and protein to storing minerals, vitamins, and sugar.

All part of the body depends on the liver for detoxification and cleaning of impurities in the blood. The liver has to also deal with processed foods, pollution, and even drugs.

The more toxins we take into our body, the more burden we place on our liver. And when your liver is overworked, you may experience some signs, such as headache, fatigue, weakened immune system, and skin problems.

Hence, you need to strengthen your liver to be able to work efficiently.

The following is a list of foods, herbs, and supplements you can add to your diet to boost your liver health:

Turmeric Root

Turmeric root contains polyphenols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This supplement has been shown to reduce the risk of fatty liver disease.

The antioxidant properties of turmeric help to protect the liver against harmful free radicals. It also reduces the likelihood of cancer-causing cells to form in the body.

Milk Thistle

The seeds of milk thistle contain a flavonoid called silymarin, and this an important antioxidant that protects the liver and supports detoxification.

Milk thistle is now a popular herb known for its amazing ability to treat and repair the liver. It helps to repair damages caused by alcohol, disease, and drugs.  More reason why it is used all over the world to treat liver disease, alcoholic hepatitis, and viral hepatitis.

The silymarin content binds to the outside of the liver cells and protects it from free radicals and toxins.

Burdock

Burdock is an herb that is commonly used as a natural detox remedy. It helps to protect the liver cells from damage induced by acetaminophen.

The antioxidants in burdock also help to lessen the effect of toxins formed from the metabolism of acetaminophen.

Artichoke Leaf

Artichoke leaf contains cynarin, which boosts the production of bile in the liver. So, by adding this supplement to your diet, you’re enhancing the detoxification process in the body, helping various organs to clear harmful toxins, including alcohols and other chemicals.

Also, artichoke leaf contains the flavonoid, silymarin, and this helps to protect the liver.

Dandelion Root

You can strengthen your liver by adding dandelion root to your diet. This supplement helps to improve detoxification and the production of bile in the liver.

The high concentration of antioxidants in the dandelion root has been shown by research to protect liver cells, as well as keep free radicals off.

Fatty fish

Fatty fish is beneficial to the liver. They contain omega-3 fatty acids which help to protect against the buildup of fats, fight inflammation, keep enzyme levels normal, and improve insulin resistance.

Adding more omega-3 fatty acids to your diet is a good way to strengthen your liver.

Coffee

Drinking coffee is one good way to protect the liver from cirrhosis and permanent liver damage. It also reduces your risk of having liver cancer.

The benefit stems from the ability of coffee to prevent the buildup of fat and collagen.

Berries and Grapefruit

Berries, including blueberries and cranberries, contain antioxidants and anthocyanins that give them their characteristic color. The extract of these berries works to keep the liver healthy.

You can add these fruits to your diet to help your liver get a good supply of the antioxidants it needs to stay healthy.

Grapefruits also contain two antioxidants- naringin and naringenin, which protects the liver from injury.

These antioxidants in grapefruits have also been shown to reduce the risk of developing hepatic fibrosis.
