What does our liver do for us and why is it so important to our overall health- Dr. Jason Jones Elizabeth City, NC Chiropractor

The liver is the second largest organ in the human body after the skin. It weighs about 3 pounds on average in every adult and it’s roughly the size of a small football. It is located below the diaphragm and under the ribs in the upper right abdomen.

That’s amazing, right? It doesn’t stop there; the liver also holds up to 13% of the human’s blood supply. And it helps support the normal functioning of the digestive system.  So you might be wondering what this big-sized organ does for us. Before we delve deeper, let me first inform you that the liver performs about 500-3000 tasks (depending on who you are listening to) just to keep the body healthy.

Functions of the Liver

The liver is split into two sections – the right lobe and the left lobe. The main function of this organ is to filter blood coming from the digestive system before circulating it to all parts of the body.

Your liver is responsible for over 500-3000 functions, and some of them include:

  • Production of bile, which helps to break down fats in the small intestine and carry away waste
  • Production of cholesterol and functional proteins that help transport fat through the body
  • Processing of hemoglobin to extract its iron content
  • Regulating blood clotting
  • Production of specific proteins for blood plasma
  • Production of immune factors to regulate infection and remove bacteria from the bloodstream
  • Clearing of bilirubin (buildup of bilirubin can cause the eyes and skin to turn yellow).
  • Converting glycogen to glucose, which your body uses for a quick burst of energy, and converting extra glucose back to glycogen
  • Removing toxins from the blood

Another interesting thing about the liver is its ability to regenerate or regrow itself. This way, you can be sure the liver will regrow to a certain extent even after a surgery to remove some of the tissue.

The existing cells first begin to enlarge, and then the new liver cells can start multiplying. The liver can return back to the same weight before surgery, and it can do this within a week or so after removing two-third of the liver tissue.

Why is the liver important to our overall health?

Looking at the many functions of the liver, it is important to keep it healthy because it has a significant impact on your overall health and wellbeing.

When you keep a healthy liver, you stand to enjoy many benefits in the following area:

  • Increased energy
  • Weight loss
  • Healthier hair and skins
  • Slowed aging
  • Hormonal balancing
  • Decreased allergy and sinus issues
  • Potential fewer pains and aches
  • Stronger immune system
  • A sharper mind and positive mood
  • Less digestive complaints, i.e., bloating, gas, and more regularity
  • Improved overall health

In conclusion, the liver supports many functions in the body and it has an amazing ability to regenerate itself fast. Without the liver, it will be impossible to break down fat and proteins, and you won’t get energy from food.
